removing the unwanted page after a table in a word editor

word editor, e.g. microsoft word or openoffice writer.

came across this problem while doing my resume, and trying to get it to fit into one single page. for some odd reason, there was a whole empty page after my table (yes, i find it easier to format and stuff when using a table. no fiddling with tab margins and alignments and the format doesn’t go haywire (as much) when you do ctrl-c/v) for no apparent reason. the obvious step of moving my cursor to the end of the table and hitting delete had no effect. there weren’t any invisible whitespace.

cue to turn on View Non-Printing Characters (or whatever it may be called on your machine. i use openoffice writer on a mac.) – and ah ha! a paragraph mark! select? nope, cannot be selected. delete? nope, cannot be deleted. i changed tack, and surreptitiously decreased the top and bottom margin (by the indiscernible amount of 0.02″ for each). still did not work so i turned to the internet, which gave me this solution:

oh. so although this paragraph mark cannot be selected, cannot be deleted, its “font size” can be changed. (what?? a non-printing character has a font size??)

there you have it. how to remove that annoying unwanted page.

(just thought of an alternative – could always print to pdf and select only “page 1″.)
